Tuesday’s Puzzle (March 15, 2010)

Tuesday’s NYT Crossword Puzzle… The solution to this puzzle’s theme lies in the answer to 52a. “What 3-, 13-, 14- and 28-Down may be” (LOADED):

3d. Tippler (BOOZEHOUND)

13d. Donkey, for one (BEASTOFBURDEN)

14d. “How many months have 28 days?,” e.g. (TRICKQUESTION)

28d. Rat-a-tat-tat weapon (MACHINEGUN)

Also, not part of the theme, but I noticed several computer-related terms in the mix:

17a. Keyboard Key (ENTER)

47a. Computer data acronym (ASCII)

56a. Program file-name extension (EXE)

Other notable answers include the puzzle’s favorite newsman, Roger MUDD (63a.); a welcome bit of “old-timey” slang in DUDED UP (45a.); and BLOTTO (31a.), potentially a call-back to Monday’s JOTTO.

Finally, the “How is this a Tuesday Question?” Award goes to: Kwame NKRUMAH (27a.), advocate of pan-Africanism and the first Prime Minister of Ghana. WHO!?
